  • Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao is a mechanical engineer, billionaire industrialist, the founder chairman of GMR Group, a global infrastructure developer and operator based in India
  • G M Rao was born on 14 July 1950, in Srikakulam district in AP, India.
  • After graduating from Andhra University, Rao joined the Andhra Pradesh Government as a junior engineer. He soon entered the trading of commodities, not content with staying on just a day job.
  • After developing good relations with suppliers and customers in the business of commodities trading, he acquired a failing jute mill at a bargain, this venture proved to be lucrative and allowed GM Rao to use this leverage from local banks to acquire other assets.
  • Eventually GM Rao divested his stake in a multitude of industries and started a bank named Vysya Bank in collaboration with ING.
  • Rao eventually diluted his stake in ING Vysya by selling his stake in whole for 340 crores.
  • The cash from the bank stake sale allowed his entry into the power business and infrastructure development through GMR Group the leader in India as an airport developer by revenues, asset size, and market capitalization.

Youth Conference Speakers

Vijay Pradeep is a Silicon Valley robotics engineer and angel investor, and has been involved in the robotics sector for over a decade. He was a Co-Founder of hiDOF, Inc., a Silicon Valley robotics consulting firm, that has worked with Fortune 500 companies and startups in a variety of areas, including VR/AR, vehicle autonomy, medical imaging, drones, personal aviation, and industrial automation. His team joined Google’s Daydream VR effort, where Vijay led the sensor characterization and factory calibration teams, helping to launch Daydream View, Tango, &ARCore.

Vijay received his B.S. in Computer Systems, focusing on Robotics and Mechatronics, and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering focusing on Control Systems, both from Stanford University. His academic contributions have been showcased in a variety of robotics conferences, journals, and books. Vijay’s contributions to ROS (Robot Operating System) and the PR2 robot platform are now used widely in the open source robotics community.

Vijay splits his time between San Francisco, California, USA and St Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago.

Vaishnavi Vura is going to be a senior at South Fayette High School. This year she discovered her passion for public speaking. Prior moving to Pennsylvania, she lived in Hyderabad,India where she learnt things about her culture and traditions. After coming to Pennsylvania she started attending Chinmaya Mission and discovered her love for Hindu scriptures. Vaishnavi took this love for her scripture and presented a TEDx talk at her school. Her talk was how to use a principle called "karma yoga" to discover the inner happiness within a person.

Vaishnavi is very active and started many initiatives in her school. She is the founder of the environmental club- which is a club making the school more eco friendly and she started an organ donation project. Organ donation is something she is very passionate about and she has organized a school wide assembly and delivered a 45 minute talk to the entire student body on why they should be an organ donor. She has hosted a booth at a local event and convinced many people to become donors. So far Vaishnavi has convinced 10 people to become donors- saving over 80 lives indirectly.

Hemanth Tadepalli is from Troy. He attends Kettering University and will be studying Cyber Defense. Hemanth has been a local government official for the City of Troy for a long time. He serves as the President of the Troy Public Library’s advisory Board, Vice President of the Police Department’s Advisory Board and now serves as a Planning Commission Representative for the City of Troy. Hemanth has been in charge/part of many campaigns across the state and country for a long time. He has worked with our very own Governor Whitmer, Congresswoman Haley Stevens, Barack Obama, Ethan Baker and many more. Hemanth’s vision is to inspire the youth in being part of local movements and show that activism plays a role in the community you live in.

ManideepTelukuntla is a Game Development freelance consultant. His previously worked on titles include: SMITE, Tribes Ascend, &DayZ. Notable achievements include: Making Awesome Sandwiches, Draining a One handed, backwards, half-court basketball shot and Winning a staring match against a Squirrel. He is a 3rd year Cyber Security Undergrad at George Mason University. Currently works as a Combat Animator for Phoenix Labs on the game Dauntless.

Alekhya finds joy in helping others help themselves. During her day job, she empowers analysts and community partners through recruiting reform, internal mentoring, and personal branding/performance improvement workshops. In her community, she loves diving into the stories of high school students and helping them sift through the noise to 'pitch' their whole selves to colleges, jobs, and the ever-nosy aunties & uncles. She currently works for Accenture as a Management Consultant within the Risk & Financial Crime space, manages the corporate citizenship relationship with Dress for Success, and is a facilitator for design thinking/ human-centered design.

Rajendra Prasad, MD, FRCPC’s family name is Grandhe. His family migrated from Andhra 1000 years ago to Udumalpet, near Coimbatore.

In 1992 he passed series 7, 63 and 65 and registered with SEC as a registered investment advisor. In 1990s he published a newsletter called “The Mutual Funds Leader”. It was a market timing newsletter. He was one of the top timers in Timer Digest, a publication from Connecticut in the 90s for many years. In the late 1998 he started a mutual fund called “Prasad Growth Fund” which was one of the best funds in the USA on and off for several years. Starting in 2009 it did not do well and he sold the fund in 2014. He was a regular guest on TV, KWHY Business Channel in Los Angeles to talk about stocks and mutual funds. He was quoted many times in the Wall Street Journal and Investors Business Daily. He has published two e-books under the pen name of “Mr. Market”. The first one was published through Booktango.com, called “Wall Street Dos and Don’ts/ Formulas to Make Money”. The second e-book was for people of India. It was “Become a Crorepati/ Invest in Indian Mutual Funds”.

God;s work: He has donated his house in India; built three class rooms and an auditorium in Sri Kannika Parameswari School in Udumalpet, Tamilanadu (his native place). His grandfather had started this school 108 years ago and now it has 3,500 students. He is a donor in crematorium, blood bank, Sri SKP wedding chapel; He pays for 75 cataract extractions a year to poor people. In the USA he is a founding member of Sri Venkateswara Temple in Calabasas, CA. In 1991 he started “USA Match for Life”, an organization to recruit donors for bone marrow/stem cell donation which later merged with Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches in Los Angeles, CA.

He is an ex-associate professor of oncology, hematology and internal medicine and spent 20 years teaching in University of California, Irvine on a voluntary basis. He is triple board certified and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. In 2007 the Congress of the United States House of Representatives gave him and his wife a certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding and dedicated services to the community.

State Rep. Padma Kuppa is serving her first term representing Michigan’s 41st House District, which encompasses the cities of Troy and Clawson.

Kuppa came to the U.S. from India at the age of four and grew up in America before moving to India as a teenager. After receiving her bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology Warangal, Kuppa moved home to the U.S. for graduate school.

Kuppa moved to the 41st district more than 20 years ago. Since then, she has worked as an engineer and project manager with a career that spans the automotive, financial, and IT industries. Throughout her life, Kuppa has sought to bring people together to solve problems both in the professional world and in the community.

Kuppa has been a civic leader, volunteering with the PTA throughout her children’s K-12 education, founding the Troy-area Interfaith Group, created to bring people of all faiths together, and serving on Troy’s Planning Commission. She is currently President of the Troy Historic Society and a board member of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion. As the first Indian immigrant and Hindu in the State Legislature, she hopes to bring a fresh perspective to the State House.

Anshu Varma is a resident of East Lansing. She is a naturalized US citizen, originally from India, and has lived in Michigan since 1985. She is a finance/management professional and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Community Engagement and Public Service:

She serves on the Board of the Ingham Community Health Centers as Finance Chair and is a member of its Executive Committee. This is an oversight board, routinely stretching the available federal/state dollars to meet client needs, increase access to care, and work on provider recruitment and retention.

She also serves on the advisory council for the MSU museum andis actively involved with engaging middle school students with mission of the MSU Museum.

Since 2003, she has worked with the Capital Area District Libraries to promote South Asian/Indian art formsas part of their Teen Programs.Specifically, she teaches Henna (Indian Asian temporary body art) at the local libraries, empowering teens through this creative art of self-expression. These events present a setting to talk about India – its culture, food, festivals and socio- economy issues. She is also engaged in several leadership activities and cultural event management for the Indian American Community in Michigan.

Professionally, she has worked in budgeting and senior financial management roles for over 30 years with the State of Michigan.

Anu Prakash is an Emmy award winning journalist who is an anchor and reporter at WXYZ Channel 7.

Since joining WXYZ, Anu Prakash has been reporting on the tough and touching stories of Metro Detroit. Anu feels it is a big responsibility and honor to share people’s stories with viewers. She is inspired by the courage and strength she has seen in the people she's interviewed over the years.

As a first generation Indian American, Anu has always looked up to her parents who taught her the value of hard work and a kind heart. They have always been her biggest cheerleaders.

Even as a kid, Anu watched the World News and developed an interest in what was going on in the world. While studying Business at Ohio State University, Anu explored her interest in broadcasting and reporting. While in school, she first worked as an intern at the ABC affiliate and got her big on-air break right out of college at that station. She's been in the industry ever since.

When Anu is not working, you will find her spending time with friends and family. She loves photography and enjoys cooking .. especially trying to recreate her mom's delicious recipes! She loves to travel and watch basketball and college football, but we won’t say who she roots for.

Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Anu now resides in Oakland County and is actively involved in the surrounding community.

Kappu Raghunathan is the co-founder of Mi Therapy Clinic in Southfield. Kappu graduated from Dr. MGR Medical University in India in 1992. Due to her interest in women's health, she trained to be a pelvic floor therapist, and treats patients with pelvic issues using a holistic and integrated approach.

She has a unique skill set which allows her to treat both the internal and external pelvic structures. This allows her to treat the pelvic unit as a whole and thus achieve more successful outcomes. She is also a vestibular therapist treating patients with vertigo and loss of balance. A self taught Chef,she was also the anchor of a popular Cooking Show on Zee TV called “Anjaraipetty”, where she dished out more than 350 recipes a year.
